Over 40 million women in the U.S. are experiencing some form of hair loss.

Genetic hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia, is the most common cause of hair loss in women. Hair loss is not socially acceptable for women and the public’s perception of female hair loss can sometimes lead to low self-esteem, severe depression and even trigger unhealthy lifestyle choices like binge eating and avoiding social interaction.

There are other factors that can cause or contribute to hair loss such as fluctuations in hormone levels, especially those surrounding childbirth and menopause. Other factors like stress, poor nutrition, illness and certain medications can all add to the problem and have a cumulative effect resulting in more hair loss that occurs at a faster rate.

Here’s a simple hair pull test anyone can do to see if they may be experiencing hair loss.

  1. Using the index finger and thumb, grab a bit of hair (about the diameter of a straw) at the root.
  2. Pull gently, but firmly, along the hair shaft from the roots to the ends.
  3. Look at the hairs left between the fingers. If you see a couple, this is normal. If more than six hairs were pulled out, it could be an indication of hair loss.
